Keep your network firing on all cylinders with PRTG’s Microsoft server monitoring tool

Microsoft is the enterprise network's engine.

It provides core functionality such as Active Directory services, Exchange mail servers, and SQL servers, enables virtualization and cloud integration, supports mission-critical applications like IIS and SharePoint, and has built-in security, integration, and management features.

With so much riding on it, you can't afford not to keep a close eye on it. And, with Paessler PRTG, you can carry out thorough server performance monitoring, without having to remember manually checking the stats.

Our all-in-one network monitoring tool has preconfigured sensors designed specifically for monitoring CPU, RAM, virtual machines, and other key components of Microsoft-built software and hardware.

But, best of all, you can set it and forget it. Once it's up and running, it will track all your key health stats round the clock, alert you if something doesn't look right, so you can fix it straight away. and even restart critical services automatically if they've been stopped.

How PRTG helps keep Microsoft servers and other Windows services running smoothly

If Microsoft made it, PRTG probably has a sensor that can connect to it seamlessly and track its various parameters to ensure it performs optimally.

Our monitoring software’s preconfigured Microsoft and Windows server-monitoring sensors can track, for example:

  • Microsoft Exchange server stats using WMI or PowerShell
  • Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2019 stats via WMI
  • Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services) servers and the applications that use them, such as SharePoint and Microsoft Reporting Services
  • Microsoft Hyper-V host hardware parameters
  • Windows system uptime and update status via PowerShell
  • Windows event logs and security center via WMI

Explore our preconfigured PRTG sensors for Microsoft Server Monitoring

PRTG comes with more than 250 native sensor types for monitoring your entire on-premises, cloud, and hybrid cloud environment out of the box. Check out some examples below!

WMI Microsoft SQL Server 2019

The WMI Microsoft SQL Server 2019 sensor monitors the performance of a Microsoft SQL Server. It can show the following and more:

  • Buffer cache hit ratio
  • Average amount of wait time for each lock request that resulted in a wait
  • Number of Transact-SQL command batches, database pages, deadlocks, full scans, lock requests, logins and logouts, page splits, SQL compilations and recompilations, user connections, stolen pages, and table lock escalations
  • Total amount of connection memory, optimizer memory, SQL cache memory, target server memory, and total server memory

Microsoft SQL v2

The Microsoft SQL v2 sensor monitors a database on a Microsoft SQL server and executes a query. It can show the following:

  • Number of rows addressed by the query
  • Execution time of the entire request
  • Execution time of the specified query

Hyper-V Host Server

The Hyper-V Host Server sensor monitors a Microsoft Hyper-V host server via WMI or Windows performance counters. It can show the following:

  • CPU usage of the hypervisor, the guests, and in total
  • Network traffic
  • Number of deposited pages
  • Number of host health-critical values

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

“From a server perspective, we're monitoring all of the key components of our service such as CPU usage, RAM disk space, the Windows services that it's running, and network connectivity of that server. In terms of networks, we’re monitoring all of our switches, firewalls, and access points. It’s really useful to be able to easily pull performance metrics from the PRTG dashboard.”

Ollie Kerslake, Infrastructure Lead
Riverford Organic Farmers

“The tool has given us greater control over all types of devices connected to the network (switches, IP telephony, security cameras, IoT, WiFi) that previously remained opaque when dealing with service incidents. This has improved our ability to diagnose and resolve problems, which has translated into greater efficiency and a better user experience in both internal and public services.”

Jordi Tolosà Bel, New Technologies Technician
Vinaroz City Council

“Our objective was to be able to monitor the health of our most critical servers containing data and applications, but also the flows and bandwidth between headquarters, our 50 servers in the cloud and the 15 servers at our production sites. For us, it is essential to have a proactive approach to understand where the weaknesses of the IT system are to be able to improve them.”

Marc Boullier, CIO

Microsoft Server Monitoring: FAQ

Why is Microsoft server monitoring important for me?

Put some clear and concise content in here. Keep your reader in mind. What are they trying to do? What are they hoping to learn? Why are they reading this? Help them out and use the tone and voice of your organization.

What is PRTG Microsoft server monitoring?

PRTG is a proprietary software tool that tracks the health and performance of Windows servers, Microsoft Exchange servers, and other servers, databases, and network hardware and software made by Microsoft. Available for Windows-based on-premises servers or as a cloud-hosted solution, it's capable of monitoring unlimited local, remote, and virtual devices, bringing critical system data together in one simple, intuitive interface you can access from anywhere: at the office, at home, or on the go.

Which technology does PRTG use to monitor Microsoft servers?

PRTG can monitor Microsoft servers via WMI, Windows performance counters, SNMP, or PowerShell.

WMI vs performance counters vs SNMP: What's the difference?

WMI, performance counters, and SNMP all have their pros and cons, and the approach you take will depend on your circumstances, particularly the size and complexity of your network and the resources you have available:

  • WMI is a commonly used Microsoft standard which provides in-depth device data and has been an integral part of all Windows operating systems since 2000. But it can be slow and use up a lot of resources, which is why we recommend using not more than 200 WMI sensors per PRTG server, with a five-minute scanning interval.
  • Performance counters are more efficient than WMI. But while they're great for monitoring individual servers, they can struggle when monitoring multiple network components at the same time
  • SNMP is easy to set up, resource-light, and works on a variety of operating systems, not just Windows. But the data it produces isn't as detailed as what you'd get from WMI or performance counters.
Can PRTG monitor a mixed server environment with both Microsoft and Linux servers?

Yes, PRTG is fully equipped to monitor a mixed server environment that includes both Microsoft and Linux servers. While it excels in monitoring Windows server performance through protocols like WMI, SNMP, and performance counters, PRTG’s flexibility extends to Linux and other platforms with the multi-platform probe, allowing you to have a unified view of your IT infrastructure. With this cross-platform support, PRTG provides comprehensive infrastructure monitoring to give you full visibility and control over your entire server environment.

What is a sensor in PRTG?

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

We asked: would you recommend PRTG? Over 95% of our customers say yes!

Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
